Making Workload Visibility and Opportunity Matching Easier to Trust

CGI Atlantic / Media Atlantic | Capstone Project

CGI is one of the largest IT and business consulting services firms in the world. Like many large organizations, CGI manages a wide range of projects and opportunities across its business, creating a need for effective ways to understand capacity and support decision-making.

To explore this challenge, CGI worked with a group of UBC Master of Data Science in Computational Linguistics students to develop a prototype designed to provide clearer insights and support more consistent decision-making.

The students worked with information provided by CGI and developed a workflow to organize, analyze, and present relevant information in a more accessible way. As part of the project, the team explored how existing information could be used to provide additional context around capacity and opportunity assignment while maintaining appropriate safeguards around the underlying information.

The result was the CGI Capacity Analyzer, a decision-support prototype with two complementary components: a Capacity Dashboard and an Opportunity Assignment Tool.

The Capacity Dashboard provides a high-level view of workload and capacity, helping users identify potential areas of availability or increased demand. It also provides additional context to help users understand the factors contributing to these assessments.

The Opportunity Assignment Tool is designed to support the process of identifying appropriate resources for new opportunities. Rather than relying solely on manual assessment, the prototype organizes relevant information and provides recommendations intended to help users make more informed decisions.

An important focus throughout the project was transparency. The prototype is designed to support and not replace human decision-making, giving users additional information and context while leaving final decisions with CGI leaders.

The project demonstrates how data-driven tools can help organizations make complex information easier to understand and use. The prototype can provide a foundation for future exploration within CGI while allowing the organization to determine how and where it may be appropriate to incorporate such capabilities into its existing processes.
