My desire to contribute to the community, particularly in healthcare, aligned with my ambition to pursue the MDS program. I envision applying data-driven solutions to streamline onboarding processes, enhance volunteer management, and mitigate the effects of staffing shortages. My goal is to utilize the skills and knowledge acquired through the MDS program to drive positive change and improve the overall efficiency and quality of healthcare services.

About Stephanie Ta

Stephanie completed her Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of British Columbia in 2024. During her bachelor’s, Ta took DSCI 100 and 310, and completed UBC Extended Learning’s “Key Capabilities in Data Science Certificate” program. This coursework confirmed how much Ta enjoyed learning and applying data science, and MDS felt like the right next step to build on those skills.  Outside of MDS, Ta loves to knit, go bouldering, or hiking. One of the program’s greatest strengths was how closely the coursework reflected real-world applications. From day one, we worked with real datasets, built predictive models, and applied our analysis to challenges that directly mirrored industry needs. The assignments were designed to simulate practical, real-world scenarios, and frequent presentations helped enhance our ability to communicate technical insights to non-experts. The Capstone project, in particular, was an invaluable experience. We worked directly with a company’s data, essentially functioning as their data scientists. This hands-on exposure not only equipped me to tackle real-world challenges, but also helped expand my professional network in the data science field.

About Nijiati Abulizi

Prior to joining MDS Okanagan, Nijiati completed both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Biochemistry at UBC Okanagan. Having completed his Master of Data Science, Nijiati aspires to work in the healthcare sector as a data scientist or bioinformatician. Read Nijiati’s story.

During my Bachelor’s degree, I spent one year abroad at Leiden University in the Netherlands where I took several courses from the Digital Humanities program. This was when I was introduced to many topics in computational linguistics and data science, including text mining, data visualizations, database creation, and formal modeling. The crossroads of these two fields began my passion for computational models of language and I later continued this after I returned to Canada to finish my degree.

About Max Ahluwalia

Max completed his Bachelor of Science in Cognitive Systems from the University of British Columbia. Max wanted to pursue a Master’s in Computational Linguistics because he sees the value of preserving languages and how technology provides the opportunity to protect the loss of languages and speakers through lasting, digital models. After completing the MDS Computational Linguistics program, Max i interested in pursuing jobs that focus on working with low-resource languages, machine translation, or developing educational tools to apply his computational linguistics skills to make a meaningful impact in this area. For my bachelor's thesis, I used statistical techniques to estimate the costs of diseases—an essential aspect of the German health insurance system. This thesis provided me with a real-life example of the importance of data science. Generally, in healthcare, the potential for data science is immense, with numerous applications ranging from medical imaging and pharmaceutical development to predictive modeling based on historical patterns of disease spread. All these factors undoubtedly steered me towards a deeper engagement with data science.

About Sandra Gross

Sandra completed her Bachelor’s of Science in Management and Technology from Technical University of Munich. While doing her Bachelor’s, Sandra participated in an exchange to UBC and wanting to gain some knowledge in the world of data science, took UBC’s DSCI 100 (Introduction to Data Science). The concrete concepts learned really piqued Gross’ interest in data science and gave her an idea of what all is possible with data science. This led her to apply to the UBC MDS Vancouver program. I was very interested in pursuing a career in Natural Language Processing and Artificial Intelligence. The UBC Master of Data Science program in Computational Linguistics teaches the last trends in NLP unlike other programs and it has advanced my understanding of NLP.

About Daniel Jimenez

Prior to entering the MDS Computational Linguistics program, Daniel Jimenez was working as a software developer with Amazon. Daniel’s favourite course during the MDS Computational Linguistics program was ‘Trends in Computational Linguistics’ because it taught the advancements in NLP.  Outside of classes, Daniel joined UBC’s Surf Club that allowed him to explore different parts of British Columbia and have fun while meeting new people. My interest in data science comes from studying epidemiology, which in a way is the data science of medicine. While studying epidemiology you learn lots of statistics, especially causal inference, and you learn how best to set up experiments to investigate research questions. I learned how to code in R, and I wrote my master’s thesis on some models I had created while looking for an association between personal-best mile time and bone stress injuries in collegiate cross-country athletes. I loved all the classes that I took in that program, but I also graduated wishing I had taken more statistics, and that I knew how to code in other languages.

About Merete Lutz

After graduating with a Master’s in Epidemiology from Stanford University, Merete pursued a career as a professional volleyball player playing in leagues in Italy, South Korea, and Japan. After retiring from the sport, Merete wanted to further her education and saw data science as a way to learn more about what she loved about epidemiology. Merete chose the UBC MDS program because it was in Vancouver, only 10 months long, targeted towards those without data science backgrounds, and really seemed to be focused on preparing students for careers in data science. Outside MDS, Merete enjoys playing tennis, doing pottery (hobbies she picked up during the program) and cooking. Read Merete’s story.

My interest in data science actually stemmed from my interest in Linguistics. When choosing my Bachelor’s degree, I only chose Data Science because I wanted to do something related to both Mathematics and Linguistics, and in a very convoluted way, I ended up finding out about Natural Language Processing, which then led me to Data Science.

About Claudia Beth Ong

Claudia completed her Bachelor’s in Science, in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence from Nanyang Technological University Singapore in 2023. After finishing her undergraduate degree, Claudia had a dilemma: accept a job offer or accept UBC MDS Computational Linguistics offer. In the end, Claudia chose attending the MDS Computational Linguistics program to further her education in NLP and gain overseas experience. Over nearly a decade, I self-taught necessary skills in data science and software development. However, to overcome professional growth limitations and solidify my expertise for long-term success, I decided to strengthen my foundation through another master's program.

About John Shiu 

Before (and even throughout) the MDS program, John worked as a Portfolio Manager at CryptAM.fund, a specialized cryptocurrency hedge fund. This role involved significant data analysis related to financial data, the development and maintenance of in-house trading systems, and business decision-making with senior management. John is taking what he has learned in several MDS courses and applying it back to his organization. When not studying data science, John enjoyed driving, Muay Tahi and skiing around Metro Vancouver. During my pursuit of a Post Baccalaureate Diploma in International Business in 2019, I delved into the field of statistics for business and economics. Additionally, I dedicated a summer day to participate in a workshop focused on Arduino programming, where I had the opportunity to create a line-following robot. These experiences collectively revealed my profound interest in both statistics and programming. Through further exploration, I discovered that data science seamlessly merged the domains of mathematics, statistics, and programming, igniting my passion for this interdisciplinary field. 

About Vimaljeet Singh

Prior to joining the MDS Okanagan program, Vimaljeet pursued professional certifications in Python and Google Data Analytics. Vimaljeet was already residing in the Okanagan when he discovered that UBC’s Okanagan campus had a master of data science program. Studying MDS in the Okanagan has been an incredible experience for Vimaljeet. The region's natural beauty offers a refreshing break, allowing Vimaljeet to find balance and recharge amidst intense studies. The thriving tech ecosystem provided ample networking, internship, and job opportunities in data science for Vimaljeet. The close-knit community and smaller cohort size fostered strong connections and collaborations with classmates and professors, enhancing Vimaljeet's learning experience. Due to my training in mathematics, I always used to do numbers and analytical work. About Qurat-ul-ain Azim

After obtaining her PhD in Mathematics from the Imperial College London, Qurat-ul-Ain Azim spent six years working as an academic teaching and doing research in Applied Mathematics. Qurat hopes to use all that she has learned to teaching data science skills, or where she can leverage her abilities to benefit people’s life in general. During my undergrad, I signed up for a programming course on a whim and ended up really enjoying it. I decided to take more electives over the years in data structures and algorithms, statistical modeling, database design, and applied machine learning and found a particular interest in data science.

About Lauren Zung

While completing her Bachelor’s of Science Behavioural Neuroscience from the University of British Columbia, Lauren worked as a junior data scientist for the UBC Digital Emergency Medicine lab where she was developing machine learning models to aid in the detection of lung pathologies. It was this experience that made Lauren realize she wanted to learn more in this area and found MDS’ comprehensive curriculum gave her the breadth and depth of knowledge she desired. About Jacqueline Chong

Before the MDS Vancouver program, Jacqueline received her undergraduate degree in International Relations from London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). While studying about global politics through the lens of major theories, Jacqueline wondered why these major theories were not backed up quantitatively. Thus, the academic pursuit of data science was born for her. When not studying MDS, Jacqueline is an avid triathlete, where she spends her free time either in the pool, on the track/park, or exploring BC by bike. About Rubén De la Garza Macías 

Prior to joining the MDS program, Rubén was working as a SaaS implementation consultant, mainly focused on supply chain optimization software. My bachelor’s capstone project was based on machine learning in which my team and I built a machine learning model to predict whether an earthquake can cause a tsunami given the earthquake characteristics. During my professional experience, I worked on building conversational AI agents for major multinational retail and financial corporations. All these contributions made me realize my interest in this field, and I wanted to pursue a professional master’s degree to gain in-depth academic knowledge.

About Gautham Pughazhendhi

After graduating with a Bachelor of Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering from Anna University, Gautham worked as a software engineer as part of a machine learning team at Sirius Computer Solutions, a CDW company. Because of the intense nature of the MDS program, Gautham credits the program for teaching him to manage my priorities efficiently and be productive. About Nico Van den Hoff

Vancouver native Nico obtained his Bachelor of Technology in Accounting from British Columbia Institute of Technology and was working in finance at KPMG LLP prior to joining the MDS Vancouver program mainly working with large banking, credit union, wealth management, manufacturing, and real estate clients. It was while working at KPMG that Nico realized his passion for machine learning. In Nico’s spare time, he enjoys long distance running (marathons), playing golf, and collecting whisky and wine. Prior to MDS, Bandari completed my B.Sc. in Behavioural Neuroscience with a minor in Biology at UBC. After completing the MDS program, Bandari will be starting medical school at the University of Western Ontario in the fall. Bandari believes MDS has given her a broad knowledge base and technical skillset that will serve her in her future career and put her in a unique position at the intersection of data science and medicine. As a CPA, I believe that I am in a unique role where I have a good understanding of the business needs but also have the strong analytical skills needed for programming and statistics. I consider data science as a tool which can be applied to many different fields and see it as being the path forward to significantly improve the work that accountants do and the analytics and reporting that business operations rely on. 

About Selma Durić

Prior to entering the MDS Vancouver program, Selma earned her Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting and Finance from Simon Fraser University. Selma worked as a senior accountant where much of her accounting work relied on data. It was there Selma realized the potential value she could bring by finding better approaches to working with data. As a long-time Vancouverite, Selma loves spending her time outdoors. An increasing number of tools now exist that fully automate the machine learning pipeline, such that anyone can fit a powerful model with little to no code. In some ways, that is wonderful because it democratizes the field. But it also opens up the risk that people use AI without understanding their models. This is why for me, a critical function of the data scientists is to interpret and explain. It is about knowing how to frame a problem before crunching the numbers. For anyone worried about the future job market, these human roles are going to be replaced by machines for a long time. With its emphasis on communication, ethics, and extracting knowledge from data, the MDS will give you the technical and critical thinking skills to become a thinking data scientist who can tackle a broad range of problems.

About Rafael Pilliard Hellwig

After completing his undergraduate studies in the social sciences, Rafael moved to the Middle East to work in organizational development, sustainability consulting, and economic development. In these roles, a common thread has been that Rafael helped companies and governments make complex data intelligible and accessible. His experience includes leading large-scale enterprise surveys, answering causal questions through quasi-experimental analysis, championing open-data initiatives and corporate transparency, and creating tools that automate the analytics pipeline. After moving back to his hometown of Vancouver in 2019, Rafael focused on helping foreign aid implementers communicate complex concepts through visualization. Rafael chose the MDS Vancouver program to deepen his technical acumen and build a network of like-minded professionals.

While I was born and raised in Kelowna, I always knew I wanted to pursue an education in a different city. After obtaining my undergraduate degree from the University of British Columbia’s Vancouver campus, I worked for seven years before returning to UBC, where I obtained my master’s degree. I then moved to Calgary where, in my operations role using large data sets to inform drilling locations, I began to see the importance and value of data analysis. When it came time to return to the Okanagan while also pursuing a master’s degree in data science, the more research I did about the MDS program at UBCO, I knew it was the right fit.  Now I’m combining my business acumen and technical background with working knowledge taught in the MDS program.

About Christian Hluchy

A Kelowna native, Christian relocated to Vancouver where he received his undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of British Columbia.  Christian then obtained a Master’s degree in Business Administration nearly a decade later, also from the University of British Columbia, before moving to Alberta to pursue a career in the oil and gas sector. After a successful stint as an operations manager that exposed him to the value of statistical analysis, Christian began looking for different career options that would help him find employment in the Okanagan. His research into the best data science program led him directly to MDS program on the UBCO campus, where he has excelled in the smaller learning environment. Christian hopes to combine his business background with the working knowledge taught in the MDS program to pursue a data related role in the Okanagan.

I gained an interest in improving my data collection and analysis techniques through teaching myself how to use Excel VBA. I started to look into how I could further improve my skills and during this search, I found that data science was the field that employed the skills that I was looking to develop. I searched for programs that offered both small class sizes and an accelerated learning path. I quickly discovered that my best option would be to return home and attend UBCO’s MDS program. While managing a system that collected vast amounts of data for a company I worked with in Moscow, I came to the realization that our customers would be interested in accurate predictions of both their revenue and future customers. This prompted a personal interest in building predictive models, however, I knew I would need to further develop my skills and experience in interpreting and using data. I recognized that the field of Data Science would provide me the skills I needed and the MDS program in Okanagan offered the perfect balance of small class sizes and accelerated learning. About Elizaveta Volkova

Originally from Moscow, Russia, Elizaveta received her undergraduate degree in Business Information Systems from the Bauman Moscow State Technical University. During her undergraduate studies, Elizaveta also took work with a Russian company that optimized business processes where she helped to manage a system that compiled and stored significant amounts of data. As a part of this work, Elizaveta identified the need to improve her skills and experience in interpreting and using data and it was in searching for different tools for data analysis and predictive modelling that she realized that the field of Data Science would provide her with the skills she was interested in. Having moved to Kelowna to enter into the MDS program, Elizaveta is now gaining the technical skills she so greatly wanted to enhance, from programming to practical experience, which will make her stand out as an exceptional candidate when she seeks opportunities after graduation.

About Vaghul Balaji

Vaghul spent four years in the financial services industry where he began as a software developer before transitioning to the role of a data engineer. Since his childhood, he has been fascinated by technology, the power of computers, and what you can do with them. That is even more true today than it was then, with the amount of data in today’s world. During his time as an undergraduate student at the National University of Singapore, he did an exchange program that led to a term spent at the University of Ottawa, where he fell in love with Canada. When he decided it was time for a career change, Canada and data science were the two key requirements. Vaghul was part of the first cohort of MDS students on the Okanagan campus and graduated in the summer of 2019. He is now a senior data engineer at Meta.

Growing up in rural Alberta, my first step away from home was pursuing an undergraduate degree at the University of Calgary. With an analytical but also creative personality, I was unsure of which path was my best fit. It was not until I completed my first statistics course that I started to see the applications of data analysis – whether it was in health care or agriculture, or anything, really. I gained a firm theoretical knowledge of statistics, but still wanted to see the real-world outcomes of my numbers. In the MDS program I’m getting the more practical training—the programming and the real-world applications—to accompany my theoretical knowledge.  

About Kira Wiese

Originally from Medicine Hat, Alberta, Kira got her undergraduate degree in statistics, with a minor in actuarial science, from the University of Calgary. Having excelled there, she began looking for career paths that would let her put her love of numbers to practical and important use. A fellow undergraduate told her about the MDS program at UBC, and when she saw it was being offered at the Okanagan campus – a smaller learning environment she thought might better suit her desire for a more close-knit, personal experience – all of the pieces seemed to fall into place. Kira hopes to be able to combine the practical skills she is learning in the MDS with the theoretical skills gained in her undergraduate degree to pursue a career interpreting data for industries relevant to her home region, like agriculture, oil and gas. Since completing the program, Kira is working as a Data Scientist at Hitachi Solutions.

I have been working with image data for a long time so, I was kind of familiar with machine learning, AI, and programming. I did so much research and talked to many people before I make my decision and switch to data science. 

About Mohsen Zardadi

Mohsen has a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Birjand and worked for Burnaby-based Kardium, a medical devices company, as a Usability Team Member. It was while in this role, he could see that everything is getting affected by machine learning and AI and saw a bright future for data science. I was fascinated by the advancements in human-machine interaction through natural language and how this field was developing. About Nihal D’Souza

Prior to joining the MDS Computational Linguistics program, Nihal completed his bachelor’s degree in computer science and engineering from The National Institute of Engineering. Nihal worked for almost three years as a Software Engineer at Cisco. Nihal applied to the MDS Computational Linguistics program because of UBC’s great reputation, its vast resources, and its incredible faculty. About Saffrin Granby

Saffrin completed her Bachelor of Science in Cognitive Systems at UBC where she specialized in Computer Science. During her undergraduate degree, Saffrin worked at the CANARY lab at UBC where she worked on using linguistic features to detect the presence of Alzheimer’s disease. About Oksana Kurylo

Before joining the MDS Computational Linguistics program, Oksana worked as a Computational Linguist and Natural Language Processing Researcher at several start-ups in her native Ukraine. It was while doing her first master's degree in Applied Linguistics from the Lviv Polytechnic National University, Oksana took a course on Computational Linguistics by Andriy Romanyuk, which opened a new world of Natural Language Processing for her. About Celine Liu

Celine obtained her Bachelor’s of Computer Science degree from the University of British Columbia. It was during an undergrad internship at Microsoft and Hootsuite that exposed Celine to the world of NLP and machine learning techniques. During the internship, Liu had the opportunity to build Natural Language Processing (NLP)-based machine learning (ML) systems and participated in a text mining research project with a group of public health researchers from UBC and BC Center for Disease Control to understand the landscape of digital public health. With the MDS-CL program now complete, Liu believed it offered here a holistic view of the classic ML models and a variety of language models as well as a great number of skillsets to her toolbox working with not only in NLP but machine learning in general. Back in 2017, I worked as an innovation consultant helping corporations fast-track digital transformation processes by partnering with tech start-ups. Some of these start-ups were using Artificial Intelligence solutions, so I needed to understand them to frame the right integration approach with the businesses' value chains. This experience was an eye-opening moment for me and triggered my decision to transition my career from a non-technical to a technical field.

About Juan Roesel

Before joining the MDS-CL program, Juan was working full-time running his consulting firm Helelab, which specialized in delivering and deploying digital solutions that leverage analytics, Natural Language Processing (NLP), and web development. As Juan was taking on more technical projects and learned new concepts, he realized that he was just barely scratching the surface of the data science universe, which led him to apply to the MDS-CL program. I decided to pursue a career in data science because I wanted to use my programming skills to work with language data. I was always interested in languages and linguistics, but I did not see myself as a translator or language instructor. I have an analytical mind, and I knew that using my skills in mathematics and programming to analyze language could be really interesting. The MDS-CL program seemed like a perfect way for me to merge my skills from both areas. 

About Darya Shyroka

After completing her Bachelor of Arts and Science in Computer Science (with a minor in Linguistics) from the University of Toronto, Darya knew she wasn’t quite done with her education. Darya was looking to specialize in a particular area of programming that she would be interested in and it led her to the MDS-CL program and its more immersive computational linguistics curriculum. Outside her MDS-CL studies, Darya loves outdoor activities such as hiking, bike-riding, swimming and camping. I was fully committed to finishing my bachelor’s and moving directly into a software position. My senior project in undergrad was a basic machine learning project where I attempted to look at social media metadata over time (number of likes, shares, etc) and try to predict the next most popular musician. This led to an 8-month co-op with TELUS which focused heavily on machine learning and text processing. This changed my perspective and interests from programming for software to programming for data science.

I saw the MDS-CL program as a typical MDS program but with the cherry on the cake. It offered mostly what the Master of Data Science offers with an additional focus on natural language processing. This was the deciding factor for me. NLP was important for me because a lot of the data I had come across came as free form texts and it was important that I learnt to work with those.

About Chidera Okoma

Chidera holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Computer Engineering from Nigeria’s Covenant University. Prior to joining the MDS CL program, Chidera worked as a data analyst with BaverianVine Ltd., a startup that consulted for the largest Nigerian institutions.
